Heavy metal and metalloid contamination in the sediments of the Spekboom River, South Africa

چکیده
Abstract The impact of anthropogenic activities such as mining, agriculture and urbanization is causing heavy metal contamination in many freshwater ecosystems. concentrations eight elements (As, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb Zn) the Spekboom River, South Africa, were studied using enrichment factor (EF) geo-accumulation index (I geo ) to assess extent pollution river. Sediment samples collected analyzed sequential inductively coupled plasma—optical emission spectrometry. results showed deterioration sediment quality with high concentration Cr Ni at all sites, this a reflection from various area. current levels could be detrimental river may pose serious threat aquatic organisms humans, act secondary source water. It therefore recommended that urgent action should taken control effluents order prevent further pollution.

The contamination of riverbed sediments by heavy metals has assumedserious problems due to their toxicity and accumulative behavior. The present studyinvestigated the concentrations of heavy metals from the bottom sediments of ShitalakhyaRiver to understand the level of contamination and their distribution. The averageconcentrations of heavy metals Al, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, As, Cu, Co, Cr, and Zn are ...

متن کاملInvestigation of Heavy Metal Contamination in the Surface Sediments of Anzali wetland in North of Iran
Over the last few decades, Anzali wetland has been at risk of pollutants, especially from heavy metals. The present research analyzes some physical and chemical properties and heavy metals concentration in 27 points in nine stations of Anzali wetland. The samples of each station have been mixed, acidic digested, and analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The mean con...

متن کاملHeavy Metals Contamination in the Surface Sediments of Talar River, north of Iran
Background and Purpose: The contamination by potentially toxic element (PTE) is a common environmental issue in worldwide rivers. The present study examined PTEs concentration in sediments of Talar River which is one of the main rivers in the Sothern Caspian Basin. Materials and Methods: The sediment samples (n= 44) were collected from top 0–5 cm of surface sediment in the main channel and flo...
